right now at 5:00. frigid temperatures and miserable conditions blan keting the midwest and east coast. now the impact rippling for bay area travelers today. a war of words over the teenage girl on a ventilator. her family's fight to move her out of oakland children's hospital. >> do you have any fingernails left? an emotional roller coaster ride for the 49ers faithful, the wild card finish with san francisco in green bay. good evening, i'm kris sanchez. do you have a voice or fingernails? fans across the bay area have been yelling at their tvs at home and restaurants and bars

hoping today would not mark the end of a great season but just the beginning of the playoff season. fans did get what they wanted out of this much anticipated rematch against the green bay packers. nbc bay area is in san jose with more on how niner fans cheered their team on at home. >> reporter: they do believe they played a big role. here are some of those fans. in fact, we are 2200 miles away from lambeau field but fans sent the team as much love and support as they could. it certainly paid off with a niners win decided by a single 33 yard kick, 23-20. the fans who actually made the trek to green bay had to brave the bitter cold but they have the joy of victory to keep them company on the way home. this game ranked among the coldest in nfl history with the windchill about an 80 degree difference in temperature today between the south bay and green

bay, which was at 10 below at kickoff. fans we talked to say while they would have loved to see the game in green bay, they are happy to have the comfort and warmth of being inside and have high hopes for the niners to take it all the way for a second year in pay row. >> we can play in the cold. we just showed that. we can play in the cold weather. >> odds have been against them and we're going to prove what we're made of. icicles and all. >> reporter: this is the second consecutive year the packers and niners faced off in the postseason and second year they walked away with a big win. the packers have to face the cold, hard truth of another loss. live in san jose. >> we have a slide show of the 49ers faithful, go to nbcbayarea.com to send your

photos and tag us on instagram at nbc bay area or tweet them at nbcbayarea. >> the weather may be nice here but the rest of the country is in the grips of the worst winter country they have seen in years. meteorologists say the worst is still to come. a polar vortex is funneling the cold eflt air over the midwest and east. even places as far south as atlanta could see temperatures in the single digits. lower michigan and eastern missouri could see between 8 and 10 inches of snow and in philadelphia roads are so icy, drivers are losing control. >> people falling, we almost fell. >> temperatures out there will be lower than what's in your freezer. >> officials are urging people to stay indoors and off the roads. but some people as you can see finding creative ways to get around snowy roadways like this

cool ride in indianapolis on this very cold day. we have live team coverage on this developing weather story for you tonight. rob mayeda has the late he hastb zero temperatures. and how the weather delays are rippling to the airport. >> reporter: so far 66 flights have been canceled at sfo, that includes 23 departing flights and 43 arriving flights, all because of the weather5&nv on t east coast. a plane actually skidded off the runway at jfk in new york this morning and went into a snow bank after landing. no one was hurt but the incident prompted thoughts to shut down jfk for an hour and that compounded the problem with weather related delays and cancellations. affected cities through the day include chicago, new york, boston, newark, washington,

dulles and philadelphia. we saw several passengers who won't be able to get to their destination for at least another day. >> we used to travel a lot with the military but this is flat-out ridiculous. it took us -- just to get any form of ticket to get back to anchorage. my feet or sore and everybody is upset and feel bad for these guys. they don't know what they are in for. >> i got an e-mail saying my flight would be canceled for tomorrow morning. i tried to call but there was high call volume, couldn't get through. >> reporter: in addition to the problems with the weather, an american airlines flight from sfo to jfk was diverted to kansas city for security reasons. american airlines flight 24 made an emergency landing after someone found what turned out to be an unattended computer flash drive in one of the bathrooms.

thinking there could be a bomb threat, it was evacuated of all passengers. in addition to the 66 canceled flights, more than 100 flights delayed at sfo and no major problems ot oakland international today. monte francis, nbc bay area news. >> now we turn to rob mayeda for the cold weather hitting the midwest and east coast. we got a taste of it with the 49ers today. >> it was lucky they didn't have to go into overtime. we're looking at the low of minus 24 and that is in the cold sector of the storm where the snow is flying across chicago and detroit. still mild on the east coast for now but as the cold front passes the eastern seaboard we'll see a huge plunge, subzero hyighs for green bay and detroit. for tuesday, upper teens and 20s and new york. and you don't ee this often.

the low in atlanta georgia dropping down to 7 degrees. this subzero air will filter into the midwest. we'll see flight delays into chicago because of that due to icy conditions and many more on the northeastern corridor. that's going to be the story into tuesday. this cold snap will stick around for a while. our own weather is the exact opposite. we came close to breaking record highs today as highs did get close to 70 degrees. we'll talk more about that and shower chances in the seven-day forecast in a few minutes. >> thank you very much, rob. at least one person killed and two more injured in a fiery plane crash at the aspen, colorado airport. the crash happened sometime afternoon local time and the plane was attempting to land. the sheriff's office says one of the two injured suffered severe injuries and plane, a challenger 600 originated in mexico but made a stop in tucson, arizona. two people are recovering

tonight from a different plane crash, this one off the southern california coastline. u.s. coast guard officials say the plane went down near catalina island near 1:00 yesterday afternoon. this is video from one of the two nearby boats that came to the rescue. the coast guard met up with one of the ships and took the pair to catalina island. the coast guard says only one victim was injured. he suffered minor cuts and broken finger. the cause of that crash is not under investigation. >> and now to our continuing coverage of the jahi mcmath saga. the 13-year-old's family is still determined to move her out of the hospital that declared her brain dead and into another hospital that will no only keep her on a ventilator but also resume feeding her. another federal hearing is scheduled for tuesday. jahi was declared brain dead by fogs physicians and independent doctors after complications

following tonsil surgery. the hospital is working with the family on their transfer efforts but he questions how the family's lawyer is describing the situation. >> keeps talking about feeding the body of jahi mcmath. for anyone paying attention to this sad and tragic case, you can't feed a body and have it get better. >> that would treat her like the human being she is and not some deceased body like children's hospital has been calling her. >> a judge ruled friday that jahi can be removed in her current condition as long as her mother is willing to assume full responsibility. the judge however did not agree to family's request to force children's hospital to insert breathing and feeding tubes and no facility has agreed to take jahi without those procedures first. an east bay mother has a lot of questions tonight for the staff of an oakland rec center after her 5-year-old went missing for several hours on the

streets of oakland. oakland police found darrel carter iii after he disappeared from the rec center around 3:00. his mother said she was told he was waiting for her in the computer room there. when she went to pick him up, he was gone. garrett wants answers but there is no excuse for what happened. >> for me to send my child somewhere, thinking he's going to be safe, is not safe because he wasn't watched. he wasn't supervised. because if anybody -- you know where a 5-year-old boy, you should know wherever he goes. you put him in a room, he should be in that room. >> darrel was found nearby just before 7:00 at the home of a relative. we did try to contact the rec center though we have not received comment from them back just yet. a string of mail theft is uncovered with an observant resident reports mail being taken from a neighbor's mailbox. four men were arrested nearby

with that suspected stolen mail. the suspects have been identified as elmar aguilar and others. possession of stolen property, conspiracy and drug related charges. police say the suspected stolen mail is from multiple addresses in pleasant ton as well as 13 other bay area cities. >> the officers were able to find in two different locations the vehicle bags of mail from various neighborhoods not from pleasanton only, danville, various other locations throughout the bay area. >> police say the capture of the four suspects is because of the immediate reporting of suspicion activity. next at 5 bei:00, the campe fire that slowed down traffic in san jose.

smoke and flames billowed into the san jose air this afternoon when a camper caught fire. it happened on meridian near hamilton after 1:00 this afternoon. firefighters contained it within

a few hours but the meantime, traffic was very slow in the area. snow injuries reported and no one was around to claim the rv, so it was toed. d.c. lawmakers get back to work after a long holiday recess. on monday they take up a bill to resume long term jobless benefits that were cut off to more than a million americans last week. republicans say they would consider extending those benefits so long as the cost was offset by spending cuts. also, look for a confirmation vote for former uc berkeley professor janet yellen to make her the next chairman of the federal reserve. not popular enough? a new trend to gain fans on facebook, well, you can hire a click farm, an ap report has been tracking a growing global marngt place for fake clicks and likes inflating engagement numbers. they are websites selling online engagement hits covering everything from linked in connections to fake twitter

india is celebrating the successful launch of a communications satellite today. >> three, two, one, zero. >> liftoff. >> the domesticically built rocket blasted from a space center in southeast india. the space organization became the sixth pace agency in the world to use this type of rockets engine. india also successfully launched a space craft for marsbo0 in november of last year. meteorologist rob mayeda has a forecast perfect for taking down holiday lights. we weren't the only ones on our street. >> we had a gorgeous day and beautiful sunset. we have high clouds going by. these are gorgeous and reflecting the last little bit of sunshine. you can see emeryville back towards san francisco, there's the golden sunset to the west. nice, i guess, after party for that 49ers win that was just outstanding today, a lot of

folks out and about in san francisco. 59 degrees and mostly clear. our current temperatures warmer than the average high temperatures this time of year which should be in the low to mid-50s. mild afternoon, the offshore winds really did the trick towards the coast, down around santa cruz, highs today close to 70 degrees and winds as long as they stay offshore, a little bit of good news, not just for keeping temperatures comfortable but air quality improved slightly. we have haze in a few spots. the peninsula will see good to moderate quality levels. as we look at the 7-day forecast, the temperatures come down this week and there are at least a couple opportunities to see a few showers. high pressure will weaken just enough to try to slide off towards the west. as ity. does so, it will allow e systems to bring rain to the west coast and little too far north to hit most of us in the bay area but the rain will get closer. what you'll see tomorrow, unlike

today is not the nonstop sunshine. by this time tomorrow evening, we'll see mostlym.p cloudy sky. tomorrow morning, sun to start and as we head into the evening, clouds start to fill in. but no rain out of this system. those are mainly mid and high level clouds. later in the week as we pass tuesday and wednesday now into thursday by the afternoon, areas towards mendocino and northern half of sonoma womill have the best chance for showers. north of interstate 80, the system on thursday may bring us a slight chance of seeing showers. temperatures cooling down and rebounding again as we head towards next weekend. high temperatures tomorrow, not quite as warm as today, mainly mid-60s around san jose. some of the warmest temperatures we'll find tomorrow in the south bay. morgan hill, 68. partly cloudy in the south bay. as you head farther north, you'll find more clouds, especially around the north bay. redwood city, 65.

as sea breeze picks up we'll see temperatures cool down especially in the north bay as we lose the offshore warm dry air sweeping in from the northeast and onshore push of marine air. oakland, 65 degrees. we tied a record high today getting up to 67 in downtown. temperatures coming a little bit down for monday and tri valley you'll see highs in the upper 60s. and i do think we may see a chance of showers but likely in the north bay towards wednesday night and thursday. >> let'f hope it's better than that because we could certainly use it. we'll start with comcast sports net, henry you're looking very calm. i'm sure this was not the case about 21 minutes ago. >> everybody in this newsroom was sweating and breathing very hard, kris, don't worry, we can all exhale now. we have a sunday sports cast packed with action. the shot after a longest winning

streak in 38 years and of course we have highlights of the nfl playoffs, the 49ers showdown with the green bay packers indefinitely lives up to the hype. it was freezing cold but the niners found a way to stay red hot. highlights are next. fan. there are the two young guys, aaron rodgers on the left and collin kaepernick on the right. rodgers, 5 yard td pass to nelson. 7-6 packers. next 49ers possession, kaepernick scrambling. he can throw but this time he left his feet do the talking. 42 yards, eventually taken down near the 10 yard line. two plays later, frank gore, 10 yard touchdown run. 49ers retake the lead, 13-7. it would get even wilder in this game. fourth quarter niners up three. packers going for it on fourth and two. rodgers, somehow escapes pressure and gets the ball for first down. packers score two plays later to take the lead. niners drive, down 4, kaepernick

a snowy tribute to the 49ers. check out the fresh snowfall just before kickoff in green bay. the goal was to copy chilly conditions at lambeau field and even opened up the freezers and put extra ice in the drinks to make it feel nice and chilly.
